The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) claims that European Commission proposals to cut direct support payments by around 5% would cost UK farmers €20 million. There would be an exemption for farmers who get less than €5000. However, the NFU argues that because the UK tends to have bigger, more efficient farms, our industry would be hit harder than in many other parts of Europe. That, they say, would be unfair. Scottish Liberal Democrat MEP George Lyon agrees with the NFU and he’s hoping the European Parliament will support getting rid of the €5000 threshold in a vote on Wednesday (12th June).
