Tales from the TSRs: Taking Stock- The Drover’s Story

September 29, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Fourth-generation drover, Robert Groth, speaks about the Travelling Stock Routes of NSW. He tells us about their importance to him, the people of NSW and our unique wildlife, and gives us his vision of the future.

The Travelling Stock Route (TSR) Network of NSW (and its corresponding network of stock routes in Queensland) is a globally unique Australian treasure. It is a network of around 600 000 ha of public land in NSW, which was established in the 1800s to allow drovers to move livestock across the state. As well as its original use for stock, the network is very important environmentally and culturally, and provides sustainable recreational opportunities for the public.

The National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) has been lobbying and working for nearly 50 years to ensure that the Travelling Stock Routes remain in public hands, and are well managed in a way that protects their diverse range of environmental, cultural, social and economic values.

NPA believes that it’s important for as many people as possible to hear about the TSRs and their many values, so we’re creating “Tales from the TSRs”, a series of articles, interviews, photographic essays and online videos that look at the TSRs through the eyes of those who depend on the network for their livelihoods, spiritual nourishment or simply for the love of the outdoors or wetting a line.”Taking Stock- the Drover’s Story” is the first in this series.

Interview conducted by James Tremain. Videography and editing by John Merkel.

This video accompanies the article “Travelling Stock Routes: The Drover’s Story” in the Winter 2012 edition of Nature NSW. Nature NSW is a publication of the National Parks Association of NSW. For more information, visit http://www.npansw.org.au.
