Cover Cropping with Rye

May 21, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Planting Cereal Rye this fall is a great way to feed your soil and you livestock. Take a quick peek to see the possibilities for creating forage and healthier soil without giving up a cash crop.

JUSTIN FRUECHTE:
We are out here showing you an awesome example of what we can be doing by double cropping on some acres. So this is a field of ryegrain that was obviously just cut a few days ago. This ryegrain was planted last Fall after corn silage was chopped. That was about the first of September last Fall.

This tends to be a little lighter piece of ground. So rye has always been really good for getting quick ground cover, preventing water or wind erosion, or creating organic matter. So that was a huge bonus. Plus now it’s the first of June, we’ve gone and cut this and we’re going to rap this up into a bale. Since it’s the first of June we can early come back to an early soybean if you need a cash crop on there. But if you need to maximize your feed resources, it’s a great way to come back into forage sorghum and chop that this Fall.

So that’s two pretty big feed crops. You know you can expect 2-3 ton off of this rye. This was exceptionally tall and thick, a great stand. It will probably be close to 3 1/2 ton I’m guessing. And then that sorghum there’s possibly another 18-20 ton. So that’s a lot of feed per acre that we are actually utilizing. Plus we are keeping that ground covered. We are doing some good things in terms of getting some organic matter with this rye holding the soil like we needed to last Fall. So that’s a win win situation.
