Crop Production Technology for Post Rainyseason Sorghum

June 15, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Postrainy sorghum(Rabi season): Unlike rainy season sorghum, the area under postrainy sorghum has remained stable in the last two decades. Because of its good quality, almost entire grains produced in postrainy season are used as human food. Similarly the stover (dry fodder) is an important source of fodder for livestock in the dry seasons where no other fodder is available . The current level of productivity of postrainy sorghum in farmers’ fields is far from satisfactory. While almost entire postrainy sorghum is grown on residual soil moisture, landrace varieties predominates (about 80%) the cultivar base. The available improved varieties and hybrids have limited acceptance by farmers, as they lack the grain quality traits and resistance to shoot fly and aphids and terminal drought tolerance that match with the popular cultivar, M 35-1(Maldhandi). Production and availability of improved varieties to the farmers is a major constraint, where private sector seed companies are not showing interest in the production and marketing because of economic reasons. The development of high grain and fodder yielding hybrid parents and cultivars with these farmers preferred traits (tolerance to shoot fly, and aphids and drought) is desirable for enhanced adoption of improved cultivars and thereby for increasing the productivity.
