As I post this, it’s December, and really cold and nasty outside. I know that many of you have parked your tractors for the winter because my web traffic has dipped, which is normal for this time of year.

It’s human nature to put off repairs, and I’m pretty bad about it. I think I got that from my dad, I try to hold on to the money as long as I can and sometimes it bites me. If you’re like me, and there are some things you wanted fixed on the tractor when you quit using it, even though it may be comfortably resting in the barn, now is the time to get them repaired.

In December (and many times earlier), most dealer’s shops have slowed way down. They may be looking for work to keep everyone busy, and many times they’ll be offering discounts on parts, service, and pickup and delivery, to drum up business. It’s a great time to give the service department a call and see if there are “deals” and get you’re tractor fixed, winterized, etc.

The other advantage to getting your equipment in for service now is the dealer can order parts on a “stock” order. Stock orders are programs offered by the manufacturers to give the dealer incentives to order large quantities of parts to sell later. They’re shipped at the convenience of the supplier, but they’re usually freight free and that can save some money, especially on large jobs when you’re not needing the tractor back immediately to do work.

Finally, if nothing else, it builds good relations with your dealer to have repairs done when you’re not in dire need of your tractor coming back. They can get your tractor in this time of year before the spring rush and it helps them to even out the seasonality of their business, they’ll love you for it.

So, pick up the phone today and call for an appointment, Be proactive on tractor repairs and help out your local dealer. It’s a win-win for everyone.
