Dad and Dave from Snake Gully ran in 2,275 15-minute episodes on Australian radio from 1937 until 1953. It featured George Edwards, the “Man with a Thousand Voices”, who played the part of Dad as well as many other characters including Ted Ramsay, Alf Morton and Uncle Clarence.
Mum was played by Loris Bingham (later Hope Sutton), Dave was played by John Saul while Edwards’ wife, Nell Stirling, played the part of Mabel.
Nell Stirling sued Edwards in 1945 for “Restitution of Conjugal Rights’ when Edwards moved out of their apartment in Point Piper, Sydney.
The daily misfortunes, loves and triumphs of the down to earth rural folk featured in Dad and Dave were based on Steele Rudd’s book, ‘On Our Selection’ written in 1899 and set in outback south-eastern Queensland. Bert Bailey bought the rights to the book and featured the characters on stage and in several Ken G. Hall films produced during the 1930s.
The serial featured its popular theme song, “On the Road to Gundagai” (Gundagai is a town in southern rural NSW).
