In this video I install a tube in a tubeless tire with a cut in the sidewall. Normally, tires with cracks or punctures in the sidewall should be replaced, but since this is a garden tractor tire, which never goes over 5 mph while mowing the grass, and a blow out does not place the operator in any danger, than a tube can be used to repair the tire. I would never attempt a sidewall repair on a tire used on a vehicle licensed to be driven on public roads.
Tire repairs should be limited to the tread area of the tire within 1 inch of the outer edge of the tread. Tires will holes greater than 1/4″ should be replaced and not repaired.
Often times people will spray fix-it flat into a tire to stop air from leaking from the tire. Fix-it flat and other brands of tire repair in a can are flammable. For this reason, care should be taken by the technician doing the tire repair. The process of repairing a tire using a plug involves reaming out the hole with a reamer tool. When the metal reamer tool is inserted into the tire, it is possible for the reamer tool to make contact with a steel belt in the tire and cause a spark. This can cause the tire to explode if it has been filled with Fix-it flat, and technicians have been injured and some have lost their lives from tire explosions. The solution to this problem is to remove the tire, clean it out and do all tire repair work with the tire off the rim.
