Khalahari BushMechanics

March 6, 2018 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Driving in the Kalahari, hundreds of kilometres from the nearest tarmac, a little bush mechanic ingenuity can really save the day!

We stopped to assist a couple of locals broken down on the side of the road to discover that all the wheel studs have sheared off the hub!

The total absence of the disk brake assembly puzzled me for a while until the owner explained that they “don’t need it, it gone long ago….” Ok, to work then!

Since the lack of studs prevented re-attaching the wheel we rigged a skid for that side with a branch and fencing wire and towed them to safety.

This pickup was rear wheel drive only and was no longer equipped with brakes, hence the tow. If it had been 4 wheel drive we could have rigged it to drive on the front wheels only and drag itself home.

Covering 2000km of dirt roads we had more than a few wheel issues of our own, 6 flats in total, two torn sidewalls and one pulled off the rim; nothing we weren’t prepared for.

Filmed by Jamie Sharp and Ross ‘Rush’ Carpenter

Music by Kirkland Bodie, ‘Bush Mechanic’ from his album ‘K.B.’s Bahamian Hits#3’

Indigenous rights in Australia, 40 years after referendum

March 5, 2018 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
KERRY O’BRIEN: This Sunday will mark 40 years since that embarrassingly long overdue referendum in which Aborigines were finally given full citizenship rights in their own country.

The overwhelming “yes” vote was the culmination of a 10-year campaign by white and black Australians, led by the daughter of a South Sea Islander slave, Faith Bandler.

At the time it was widely hoped the referendum would also deliver something closer to equality for Aborigines, but after more than 100 years of deep inequality, Aborigines were also looking for justice.

Forty years on, the push for Aboriginal rights has produced mixed results. The poor health and poverty rates of Aboriginal communities remain an international blight.

Deborah Cornwall reports on the campaign which led to the 1967 referendum, and its legacy.

Indigenous viewers are warned that this story contains images of people now deceased.
