Description given on Youtube:
Driving in the Kalahari, hundreds of kilometres from the nearest tarmac, a little bush mechanic ingenuity can really save the day!
We stopped to assist a couple of locals broken down on the side of the road to discover that all the wheel studs have sheared off the hub!
The total absence of the disk brake assembly puzzled me for a while until the owner explained that they “don’t need it, it gone long ago….” Ok, to work then!
Since the lack of studs prevented re-attaching the wheel we rigged a skid for that side with a branch and fencing wire and towed them to safety.
This pickup was rear wheel drive only and was no longer equipped with brakes, hence the tow. If it had been 4 wheel drive we could have rigged it to drive on the front wheels only and drag itself home.
Covering 2000km of dirt roads we had more than a few wheel issues of our own, 6 flats in total, two torn sidewalls and one pulled off the rim; nothing we weren’t prepared for.
