Ancient DNA provides an approach to directly track the progression and ‘real time’ evolution of the crops involved in agriculture. Advances in technology have allowed us change the way we think of the arrival of agriculture to northern Europe and it’s adoption by indigenous peoples, produce genome scale analyses of DNA, RNA and methylation profiles from archaeological material. This provides us with the ability to unpick the palimpsest of the genomic script, and identify how our crops gained the qualities they have and provide insights from the past that can help the future.
