The team discovers that Wartime Farmers could lose everything – their home and their land – if the government did not think they were productive enough. Over 2,000 farmers deemed ‘not good enough’ were thrown off their farms during the war.
Ruth, Peter and Alex face a World War Two-style government inspection, meeting an expert who tells them to grow and to get their milking operation up and running.
In the process they confront the wave of mechanisation that government regulation brought to wartime farming, grappling with a new tractor and getting to grips with a milking machine. Yet they are dealt a bitter blow with the loss of a prime dairy cow. Peter also launches a rabbit-breeding concern and they take in the latest release from the Ministry of Information, who made films urging farmers to use the very latest techniques in the fields.
The team also discovers the chilling story of a local farmer who lost his life in a dramatic shoot-out with the police after the authorities tried to remove him from his farm for failing to meet his required targets.
With their hard work completed the inspector returns to judge the state of the farm and award them their all-important official ‘grade’ – determining whether their efforts have been a success or a failure.
Wartime Farm was produced by the BBC in partnership with The Open University.

Building a primitive wattle and daub hut from scratch
Description given on Youtube:
I built this hut in the bush using naturally occurring materials and primitive tools. The hut is 2m wide and 2m long, the side walls are 1m high and the ridge line (highest point) is 2m high giving a roof angle of 45 degrees. A bed was built inside and it takes up a little less than half the hut. The tools used were a stone hand axe to chop wood, fire sticks to make fire, a digging stick for digging and clay pots to carry water. The materials used in the hut were wood for the frame, vine and lawyer cane for lashings and mud for daubing. Broad leaves were initially used as thatch which worked well for about four months before starting to rot. The roof was then covered with sheets of paper bark which proved to be a better roofing material (*peeling the outer layer of bark does not kill this species of tree). An external fireplace and chimney were also built to reduce smoke inside. The hut is a small yet comfortable shelter and provides room to store tools and materials out of the weather. The whole hut took 9 months from start to finish. But it only took 30 days of actual work (I abandoned it for a few months before adding bark roof, chimney and extra daub ).

Farmers demand milk price regulation
Description given on Youtube:
http://www.ntv.co.ke
Farmers from Central Kenya want the government to regulate the price of raw milk because low prices have forced many of them out of business. The farmers says that if the prices were better, then more milk would be produced, reducing the occasional milk shortages in the country. And in Lugari in Kakamega County maize farming is under threat this season as more farmers opt to go into sugarcane farming instead. The farmers say cane farming is more profitable compared to maize.
