Before you put your chainsaw away for winter you conduct a complete service. Start with the air filter. No need to replace the air filter simply blow it out with and air compressor and wash in warm soapy water. Next replace the spark plug. A very nice feature with Stihl and Husqvarna (translated mill house) Is all respective models share a common spark plug. Next replace the drive sprocket for this is prone to wear. Remove the fuel filter from the fuel tank and replace with a new part. Blow all wood chips and dust from covers and around carburetor. If you are not going to use your chainsaw over the winter it is best to empty fuel tank, start engine and run until the saw dies. Be sure to fill the bar oil reservoir to prevent moister from collecting inside of oil reservoir. If you will be using your chainsaw over the winter fill the fuel tank with non ethanol fuel / gas premium stabilized fuel. Check your pull start rope for wear and replace if needed. Last be sure to never store your saw on a concrete floor. Low places tend to collect moisture and be sure to start your saw at least once a year. I nearly forgot. This is a good time to replace your chain with a good full skip square chisel and full skip teeth.

Troubleshooting is a form of problem solving, often applied to repair failed products or processes. It is a logical, systematic search for the source of a problem so that it can be solved, and so the product or process can be made operational again. Troubleshooting is needed to develop and maintain complex systems where the symptoms of a problem can have many possible causes. Troubleshooting is used in many fields such as engineering, system administration, electronics, automotive repair, and diagnostic medicine. Troubleshooting requires identification of the malfunction(s) or symptoms within a system. Then, experience is commonly used to generate possible causes of the symptoms. Determining which cause is most likely is often a process of elimination – eliminating potential causes of a problem. Finally, troubleshooting requires confirmation that the solution restores the product or process to its working state.

In general, troubleshooting is the identification of, or diagnosis of “trouble” in the management flow of a corporation or a system caused by a failure of some kind. The problem is initially described as symptoms of malfunction, and troubleshooting is the process of determining and remedying to the causes of these symptoms.

A system can be described in terms of its expected, desired or intended (usually, for artificial systems, its purpose). Events or inputs to the system are expected to generate specific results or outputs. (For example selecting the “print” option from various computer applications is intended to result in a hardcopy emerging from some specific device). Any unexpected or undesirable behavior is a symptom. Troubleshooting is the process of isolating the specific cause or causes of the symptom. Frequently the symptom is a failure of the product or process to produce any results. (Nothing was printed, for example).

The methods of forensic engineering are especially useful in tracing problems in products or processes, and a wide range of analytical techniques are available to determine the cause or causes of specific failures. Corrective action can then be taken to prevent further failures of a similar kind. Preventative action is possible using failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA) before full scale production, and these methods can also be used for failure analysis…

A basic principle in troubleshooting is to start from the simplest and most probable possible problems first. This is illustrated by the old saying “When you see hoof prints, look for horses, not zebras”, or to use another maxim, use the KISS principle. This principle results in the common complaint about help desks or manuals, that they sometimes first ask: “Is it plugged in and does that receptacle have power?”, but this should not be taken as an affront, rather it should serve as a reminder or conditioning to always check the simple things first before calling for help.

A troubleshooter could check each component in a system one by one, substituting known good components for each potentially suspect one. However, this process of “serial substitution” can be considered degenerate when components are substituted without regards to a hypothesis concerning how their failure could result in the symptoms being diagnosed.

Simple and intermediate systems are characterized by lists or trees of dependencies among their components or subsystems. More complex systems contain cyclical dependencies or interactions (feedback loops). Such systems are less amenable to “bisection” troubleshooting techniques…

This First Aid at Work course is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities to provide first aid when dealing with an emergency situation.

It provides learners the knowledge and skills needed to deal with a range of emergency first aid situations. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of the first aider.

The duration of this First Aid at Work course is 3 days.

First Aid at Work Training courses

If an employer has identified that first-aiders are needed in their workplace, they must ensure that those identified to be first first aiders undertake training appropriate to the need – typically this may be first aid at work (FAW) or emergency first aid at work (EFAW):

EFAW training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work.
FAW training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses.

Employers may also identify some other level or standard of training that is appropriate to their needs.

The findings of the first-aid needs assessment can help employers decide whether their first-aiders should be trained in FAW or EFAW or to some other appropriate standard. As a guide, the table in First aid at work: your questions answered suggests what first-aid personnel to provide under different circumstances.

FAW training courses involve at least 18 hours of training and are run over a minimum of three days. EFAW training courses involve at least six hours of training and are run over a minimum of one day. Other appropriate training identified by an employer should have a duration that relates to the syllabus content (as compared with FAW and EFAW) HSE continues to set the syllabus for both FAW and EFAW.

Certificates

Certificates for the purposes of first aid at work last for three years. Before their certificates expire, first-aiders will need to undertake a requalification course as appropriate, to obtain another three-year certificate. Once certificates have expired the first aider is no longer considered to be competent to act as a workplace first aider.

This presentation demonstrates the process of choosing, collecting and constructing a bowdrill fire set, using Lantana as the wood and producing fire.

The video is presented by Gordon Dedman, founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA). Gordon has travelled extensively and completed numerous Survival and Bushcraft Courses worldwide at schools run by Ray Mears, Dave Canterbury, Lofty Wiseman and Bob Cooper.

Gordon is a former member of the Australian Army 1st Commando Regiment and is presently attached to NORFORCE, an Australian Army Reserve Regional Force surveillance unit.

NORFORCE conducts patrols in the remote areas of Northern Australia, working closely with Aboriginal communities.
