Sweet Sorghum: A Crop for the Desert

July 26, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Mitchell Stover is an undergraduate studying a crop called sweet sorghum, a potential source of ethanol, as opposed to corn. His research at the University of Arizona focused on water stress (how plants deal when only given access to extremely limited amounts of water), and since droughts have destroyed corn crops across the Midwest of the United States, the results of his research have significant implications for farmers and the crops they choose to grow in the future.

Segment from the program Kingdom Plantae: Builders of Biomes.

DVD Description
Our Plant DVD starts by looking at the watery origins of modern land plants before looking at the adaptations that have evolved in plants and enabled them to spread to nearly every corner of the Earth. These adaptations include: roots, which anchor plants and absorb water and nutrients from the soil; vessels, that conduct water and nutrients throughout a plant; lignin, which stiffens and supports plants enabling them to grow taller; pollen, which frees plants from a dependence on water for reproduction; and fruits, which entice animals to unwittingly spread a plants seeds far and wide.

Diversity Array technology for association mapping in wheat

July 22, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
The most important goal of plant breeding and genetics today is to determine the genetic architecture of complex traits that are economically important. Though this has been accomplished to an extent by traditional linkage and QTL mapping, the focus today has shifted
to association mapping because of the higher resolution and the lesser time advantages that it offers. Genotyping in association mapping by SSR’s and AFLP’s have few problems associated with them which has led to the use of a high throughput whole genome profiling technology called Diversity arrays Technology or DArT genotyping.
This video focuses on the potential of using the DArT technology for association mapping in a complex polyploid genome like wheat. First, it gives an overview of the DArT technology highlighting the steps and then describes its application for the association mapping in wheat. Besides, it also illustrates examples from scientific research where this technology has been applied.

The Pros and Cons of GMOs with Bill Nye & Chuck Nice

July 13, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Now that Bill Nye has famously changed his opinion about GMOs, a fan thinks Bill is the perfect person to discuss their pros and cons. Watch Bill Nye the Science Guy play devil’s advocate and outline the beneficial and non-beneficial aspects of using GMOs. Although the effects on the ecosystem may be balanced out by the ability to grow more food on less land, unintended consequences may still arise as a result of the use of herbicides and monoculture farming, as did those that affected monarch butterflies and pollinators like bees. Don’t miss comic co-host Chuck Nice’s hilarious imitation of a worker bee’s take on the issue of monoculture farming.

This “Behind the Scenes” video was shot during the recording of our episode, ” Cosmic Queries: GMOs with Bill Nye (Part 2).” If you’d like to listen to the full podcast, click here: http://www.startalkradio.net/show/cosmic-queries-gmos-with-bill-nye-part-2/
