Caring for Carers: Depression, Anxiety and the Impact of Caring
Description given on Youtube:
There are nearly 2.6 million people in Australia who are carers. Carers provide unpaid care and support to people who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail. These people may not call themselves ‘carers’; they are partners, parents, siblings, relatives, other family members and/or friends. Carers come from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. They may be working or studying, as well as providing care. They may be any age. Caring can be a demanding role that requires mental and physical energy, commitment and dedication.
Carers in outer regional and remote areas experience higher rates of disability or a long-term health condition themselves, and are more likely to experience financial hardship than carers in major cities. Indigenous people in rural and remote Australia are also more likely to be carers than non-Indigenous people in these areas.
Caring for a person with a mental illness has particular challenges. The episodic nature of mental illness, the stigma still associated with it, the symptoms of the illness, and the struggle to obtain appropriate treatment and care for a family member or friend, can all contribute to a carer feeling overwhelmed. Carers need strategies to manage these challenges. Their experiences can predispose carers to mental illness themselves. In 2007, carers were found to have the lowest wellbeing of any large group recorded by the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index in The Wellbeing of Australians: Carer Health and Wellbeing.
This program covers two main areas.
Firstly, it discusses the experiences and particular challenges for carers supporting a person with mental health problems. The importance of carers as part of the care team, and useful strategies for supporting a person with a mental illness are included.
Secondly, the program acknowledges the impact of caring on the carer’s physical and mental health. It assists health practitioners to develop practical ways to support and encourage carers to look after themselves. Support, counselling and respite services are also examined.
The program is introduced by Joan Hughes, CEO of Carers Australia.

The Origins of Civilization. History of Technology and Culture (Documentary)
Description given on Youtube:
The Origins of Civilization. History of Technology and Culture (Documentary)
In the world of hunter-gatherers, tribes roved the land, but the coming of farming allowed the growth of settled populations to take place. Yet it did not make the coming of civilization inevitable. Something else had to happen before this could occur.
It has long been realized that river valleys have played a key part in the rise of many, if not most, “original” civilizations — i.e. those which did not derive their technological or cultural capabilities from older civilizations. River valleys offer areas of well-watered, fertile soil, which, because of their very high agricultural productivity result in very dense human populations.
But why didn’t this result simply in a proliferation of small farming villages closely scattered across the plains? What follows in this article is of course speculation, as no records have survived from these millennia – writing comes at a late stage in the emergence of civilization. However, civilization did emerge, and it does need explaining.

Bushcraft Camping Part 4, Scary Abandoned Roads in Dense Bush
Description given on Youtube:
Hiking on an abandoned and unmaintained road in Australia, some people consider this to be very scary. Many roads have been abandoned due to lack of interest, lack of resources and often because the government is trying to restrict access to certain areas of bushland. But you never know, it might be an abandoned road because of some unsolved axe-murder that occurred JUST KIDDING
These abandoned roads are very interesting to hike on because you have the whole trail to yourself! For the first few kilometres the road in the video was easy to follow but eventually it completely disappeared and we were literally just bush bashing. After 2 kilometres of bush bashing we reached another bush track which led us to the more open road that you see us camped on 🙂 We use a GPS, paper map and compass to navigate these trails and roads. Unfortunately the maps are often inaccurate and quite old, the roads are sometimes in different positions due to bush fires (wild fire). After a big bushfire the track repair workers may be forced to rebuild the roads ‘close-by’ rather than exactly where they previously were; sounds sketchy? LOL Without knowledge of navigation one could easily get lost on these abandoned roads.
