El Niño to La Niña [1080p]

May 12, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
In 2010, the El Niño climate pattern shifted quickly to one of the most powerful La Niñas in fifty years, resulting in dramatic flooding in Australia as well as other extreme weather through the spring of 2011. Using sea-surface temperature data and data of global cloud patterns, this data visualization reveals 2010’s prominent ENSO cycle shift as well as the wild weather that resulted.

Australian officials have warned that the El Nino weather pattern could worsen the drought in an area known as the country’s food bowl.

The Murray-Darling river basin is already suffering badly from a drought that has lasted for nine years.

Al Jazeera’s Laura Kyle reports from the farming region of Mildura.

Bill Nye Clashes with GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn

April 22, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) appeared on Meet the Press on Sunday to debate former television host Bill Nye about the effects of climate change and how best to address those impacts through public policy.

Blackburn spent much of the interview debating Meet the Press host David Gregory who asked a series of pointed questions which challenged her underlying assumptions.

Gregory began by citing a post in The Atlantic which summarized the Republican position on man-made global warming as acknowledging it exists but being wary of the proposed remedies which would negatively impact economic growth. “The fix can be very expensive in the short-term for long-term gain,” Gregory said.

Blackburn countered by asserting that “there is not consensus” that a slight increase in carbon in the atmosphere has resulted in widespread environmental effects. She cited a series of academic reports that challenge the notion of consensus.

ALERT: NASA Predicts ‘Weather Chaos’ for 2016 as El Niño Hits America

April 15, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
El Niño is STILL growing as Nasa predicts ‘weather chaos’ for 2016 as ‘Godzilla’ phenomenon hits America

Nasa warns US of ‘the arrival of steady, heavy rains and snowfall.’ In the United States El Niño’s biggest impacts are expected in early 2016. The current strong El Niño brewing in the Pacific Ocean shows no signs of waning, new Nasa images have revealed.

El Niño 2015 has already created weather chaos around the world,’ Nasa said.
Over the next few months, forecasters expect the United States to feel its impacts as well.
The latest Jason-2 image bears a striking resemblance to one from December 1997, by Jason-2’s predecessor, the Nasa /Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) Topex/Poseidon mission, during the last large El Niño event.

The images show nearly identical, unusually high sea surface heights along the equator in the central and eastern Pacific: the signature of a big and powerful El Niño.

Higher-than-normal sea surface heights are an indication that a thick layer of warm water is present.

El Niños are triggered when the steady, westward-blowing trade winds in the Pacific weaken or even reverse direction, triggering a dramatic warming of the upper ocean in the central and eastern tropical Pacific.

Clouds and storms follow the warm water, pumping heat and moisture high into the overlying atmosphere.
These changes alter jet stream paths and affect storm tracks all over the world.

How does hail form? | Weather Word of the Week

April 10, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
OH HAIL NO! We have one HAIL of a word for you this week. It comes from Andrew Sitrin, who wants to know what hail is. So – let’s find out what the hail is going on.

I’m Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers, and hail is precipitation in the form of balls or irregular lumps of ice formed when liquid precipitation freezes, adding layers of ice as it is lifted and cooled within a thunderstorm.

All thunderstorms have an updraft and a downdraft. Hail forms when that updraft is strong enough to lift raindrops high enough into the storm where they freeze, then begin to fall again before being lifted high into the cloud. This process repeats itself until the hail stone becomes too heavy to be lifted again.

That’s why hail stones appear layered when you cut into them, and the stronger the storm and its updraft, the larger the hail.

In the United States, hail is considered severe when it reaches one inch in diameter or larger. The biggest hail stone on record fell in South Dakota on July 23, 2010 and measured a whopping 8 inches in diameter.

Most hail is much smaller than that record-breaker, but it can still do significant damage, and it causes about a billion dollars in property and crop damages every year.

Is there a weather word you’d like to know? Then what the hail are you waiting on?! Leave it in the comments below, tweet me, or send me a message on Storm Shield’s Facebook page! And while you’re at it, like this video and subscribe to the channel.

See you next week!
