11. Acid Rain
Acid rain arrived in Iran along with November in 2013 and caused an unprecedented increase in respiratory problems throughout the country. Iran has the dubious distinction of having four of the top ten most polluted cities in the world, including Ahvaz, the world’s most polluted….

10. Clouds from Space
Particularly strange and otherworldly clouds covered Panama City Beach, Florida on the same day as the rare snowstorm that hit Libya. The two weather phenomena happening on the same day had weather experts more excited than Billy Mays doing an infomercial.

9. Neon Beach
Juhu Beach in Mumbai was lit fluorescent blue for the second time this year. The brilliant light show happens thanks to tiny plankton called dinoflagellates becoming disturbed, which activates their bioluminescence, or their ability to produce light. The site is so visually spectacular that people usually assume that pictures of the phenomenon are fake.

8. Whirlpool in Latvia
An enormous whirlpool appeared in a river in Latvia that swallowed everything near it. Onlookers got a video of the incident, which happened in April of 2013. People speculate that it could actually be a sinkhole beneath the river.

7. Rare Clouds Over Norway
Witnesses observed polar stratospheric clouds over Norway in May of this year. Sunlight shining through ice particles in the clouds create the amazing colors seen in the formations. The rare sights shape a minimum of seventy thousand feet high, double the height a commercial airline flies. While beautiful, the clouds are very destructive to the ozone layer.

6. Giant Hailstone
Usually when someone says that they experience hail the size of a golf ball they are exaggerating. This saying would have been an understatement in Vivian, South Dakota on July 23, 2010. Les Scott collected a huge hailstone from his backyard and immediately threw it in his freezer. A good idea since the hailstone ended up being 8 inches in diameter and nearly 2 pounds, setting the U.S. record for the biggest hailstone ever recorded.

5. Siberian Snowball Madness
A bunch of snowy ice balls washed on the shores of western Siberia in November to the delight of one nearby bear. The rare process involves small pieces of ice being rolled by wind and water to form a giant sphere. While rare the spectacular natural event is not one of a kind. People took pictures and videos of a similar mass of balls on the shores of Lake Michigan in 2010 and again in 2014.

4. Ominous Lakes
Scientists recently concluded a satellite-based study in which they observed a worrisome phenomenon in eastern Antarctica for the first time. Researchers saw almost 8,000 supraglacial or meltwater lakes form between the years 2000 and 2013. Experts have observed other meltwater lakes in different parts of the continent and the world, but the fact that they are showing up in a region that was thought to have relatively stable and frigid weather is what is so troubling about the discovery. The lakes have been shown to drastically increase ice melting in Greenland, which in turn increases the global sea level.

3. Crazy Cloud Over Costa Rica
People were bewildered and amazed to see an intense but beautiful formation in the sky that experts believe was a weather phenomenon called cloud iridescence. Thousands of pictures and videos were shared on social media in early September last year when these clouds showed up in the skies of Escazu, Costa Rica. Witnesses described the clouds as looking like a precursor to the end of the world and a sign of God.

2. Circular Rainbow
A rainbow is a relatively common sight that almost everyone has seen in the sky at one time or another. Much rarer is spotting a circular rainbow, and that is because the conditions have to be perfect. They can only be seen from the air when the sun is shining behind the observer through raindrops. Seeing one is incredibly rare and getting a picture of one is even rarer. A photographer was flying over Cottesloe Beach in Australia during a rain shower in 2014 when he saw this incredible circular rainbow.

1. Greek “Lost City”
When divers came across round columns and concrete looking floors on the ocean seabed off the Greek island Zakynthos they naturally assumed that they had stumbled upon a long-lost civilization. Similar discoveries had been made in the area, after all. Experts recently found that the so-called lost civilization was a naturally occurring geological phenomenon that happened over 5 million years ago. Geologists have seen similar structures before but never in waters so shallow.

Italian Week 2013 – Engage your Emotions

March 7, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Italian immigration in Australia dates back to the beginning of white settlement with Italians appearing in the first Census produced in New South Wales in 1828. Mass migration saw 360,000 Italians arrive between 1947 and 1976 (Rando, 2000). In the century between 1870 and 1970, 26 million people migrated from Italy (Gabaccia, 2006) many to multicultural Australia which now has the third highest level of foreign population (Frost, Reeves, Laing, & Wheeler, 2009). The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs that Italian culture is strongly present in Australia, especially in Queensland where over 100,000 people are of Italian origin and of these 27,000 are Italian speakers while 15,000 are also Italian Citizens. These numbers make Italians one of the largest ethnic groups in the State (Arrighi, 1991). Italian migrants brought into the Australian lifestyle their own traditions and culture, playing a crucial role in establishing the multicultural identity of Queensland (Pesman & Kevin, 2001).

It is in this environment in 2007, that a premium cultural Italian festival in Queensland was created. The Italian Consul General suggested that the influence of Italian Culture in Australia needed to be emphasized, promoting a modern and dynamic Italy. Italian Week commenced as a collaboration between the Italian Government and the Queensland Government, with the first festival paying special attention to the story of Italian migration and its contribution to the enrichment of Australian culture.

The festival occurs in various cities around Queensland focusing on Brisbane, and marks the ‘Festa della Republica’, the Italian National holiday celebrated on the second day of June. It commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when the Italian population was called to decide between a monarchy and republic following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. After 85 years of monarchy Italy became a Republic, and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled. This is one of the most important Italian national holidays which, like July 14th in France (Storming of the Bastille) and July 4th in the USA (Independence Day), celebrate the birth of the nation (source: Italian Week website).

Honoring this important date in Italian history and as a tribute to the influence of Italian culture in Australia, Italian Week developed a concept in 2009 to create a point of focus. Known as the ‘Illumination’, this focus point consists of lighting up key structures in the city of Brisbane in the Italian colours of green, white and red for the duration of Italian Week. You can see a short video clip of the illumination on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hrykLQzM30

Starting with the Treasury Casino in the heart of Brisbane, historically significant buildings and architectural structures have been illuminated since 2009. The former Queensland Government Treasury Building (http://www.treasurybrisbane.com.au) built in the 1890s and early 1900s served as a symbol of self-government and as a focus for celebratory and patriotic displays. In 2011, to mark the 150th Anniversary of Italian unification, in addition to the Treasury Casino, Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge was Illuminated in the ‘Tre Colori’ or the ‘three colours’ as the Italian national flag is known. Located opposite the Treasury Casino and next door to the Gallery of Modern Art, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre stands at the heart of Southbank’s cultural precinct. In a spectacular display of light and colour, both the Casino and QPAC were ‘Illuminated’ in 2012 as a feature of Italian Week.

As stated, this event has been designed as a ‘focal point’ and is a key component of Italian Week, sending strong signals to Australians that the influence of Italian culture in Queensland is well appreciated and valued. The Illumination is designed to stimulate and create ’emotional engagement’, engendering commitment and pride within the Italian and Australian community in Queensland. It is believed that the creation and stimulation of ’emotional engagement’ can and does extend the longevity of the festival, generating anticipation of future editions. This powerful and emotive symbol known as the ‘Illumination” is visible for the entire week of the festival and is seen by hundreds of thousands of people. Supported by extensive marketing and public relations, the event is now well known and popular.

Short cut method to check RABIES DISEASE symptoms in a cattle

Rabies

By attacking the nervous system, brain and spinal cord, Rabies can cause brain deterioration and death. It is preventable through the use of vaccinations, an option available since Louis Pasteur introduced a vaccine in 1883.

All mammals are thought to be susceptible to the rabies virus, a fatal viral zoonosis caused by the Lyssavirus causing acute inflammation to the brain (Encephalitis). It is considered to be all but 100 per cent fatal.

Although not an issue in Western Europe, the virus is a ‘high risk’ problem in parts of South America, Africa, Russia and much of Asia. Much of the world is affected by bat rabies but concern intensifies when the virus is in fox, raccoon and skunk populations.

Cause

A bite from an infected wild animal, such as a fox or raccoon, is a common method of infection in cattle. In Europe, rabies in dogs is a growing concern,in Africa the threats come from Jackals and in Northern Europe, Wolves are a prime vector of the virus.

Saliva is the main method of transmission of the virus being shed through infected cattle and spreading through the body via the bloodstream. It travels to the spinal cord where it can incubate for months on end, although 3-12 weeks is common. From the spine the virus moves into the brain, at which point clinical signs of rabies often appear in cattle.

It is possible for the virus to enter the body through orifices and lacerations to the skin. This however, is uncommon. Open wounds, mucous membranes, eyes and the mouth are possible entrance points for the virus. Under normal conditions the virus is not spread through the air, though this method of transmission is possible.

Often presented in a single animal rather than the full herd, rabies can be spread due to the curious nature of cows who will inspect raccoons, dogs, foxes etc. that are exhibiting strange behaviour.

Transmission from unpasteurised cow’s milk to humans is currently being scrutinised although properly cooked meat and pasteurised milk from infected animals poses no danger to humans.

Clinical Signs

In the absence of anti-viral rabies drugs, progress to death is rapid once clinical signs appear. Milk production and feed intake may drop gradually before rapidly falling and cows may look very alert, staring at objects.

Aggressive, excitable or exaggerated movements can be signs of rabies. Sexual activity can be increased, including mounting behaviour. Bulls can have persistent erections or a prolapsed penis.
Other Signs Include

Inapettence (Lack of appetite)
Dyspahgia (difficulties swallowing)
Altered Vocalisation
Seizures
Incoordination of hindquarters – Unsteady gait
Prevention

Education and vaccination of wild animal populations can control rabies transmission. By limiting the number of wild animals carrying the virus and the chance that those animals will come in contact with pasture and farmland, the likelihood of rabies transmission is reduced.

Cautious handling of cattle with undetermined illnesses is recommended, especially if neurological signs have been observed. Examining a cow’s mouth should be done with gloves to avoid exposure of the veterinarian’s or stockman’s hand to saliva.
