Highland Cattle The Famous Highland Drove part 1

March 8, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
The Famous Highland Drove 1981. Droving Highland cattle across Scotland in the footsteps or hoof prints of the Drovers and the vast droves of cattle that were reared in the Scottish Highlands. They were moved on foot to trysts in Crieff and Falkirk then fattened in southern pastures in England. This was an annual event and provided the bulk of the beef for the expanding cities of England and the Army and Navy of Wellington and Nelson during the Napoleonic wars….English beef on Highland bone! Today sadly much of the Highlands is under utilised but at one time supported a vast cattle economy. The Highlands could again support this economic activity and return fertility to these now empty glens……today the Highlands are empty of people and livestock just covered in trees or windmills! I think a return of these Highland cattle in large numbers would reinvigorate the upland regions of the UK and provide a ready supply of UK reared beef. About a 2 minute introduction….stick with it.

Description given on Youtube:
Simon Orford talks through the key stages in the annual cycle of our autumn sown wheat trials based on our farm in Norfolk in the South East of the UK.

From sowing in early through late autumn he describes in detail how to score key traits or characteristics linked to crop performance such as ear emergence, anthesis, crop height, lodging and tiller harvesting that underpin the genetic investigations aimed at understanding and improving the wheat crop.

The video was developed as part of the Wheat Improvement Strategic Programme (WISP), http://www.wheatisp.org/ funded through the BBSRC and presented as part of the annual WISP course on wheat Genetics which is a four day course aimed at anyone with an interest in cereals research and crop breeding. The course is an entry level introduction, giving a taste of wheat genetics, from field trials to QTL analysis (http://wisplandracepillar.jic.ac.uk/training.htm).

Shifting the safety culture on farm – how Hassad has reduced on-farm injuries

March 6, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
The injury rate is now close to zero at ‘Raby Stud’, near Warren in New South Wales, thanks to the attitude that ‘it won’t happen to me’ is simply not good enough to ensure everyone gets home safely to their families every night.

Key to this shift has been a blame free workplace where staff feel more than comfortable to talk about safety, regular ‘tool box’ meetings’ between staff and management, systems to ensure regular checking of workplaces and machinery, safety signage and inductions for new staff and contractors.

According to research conducted by the Primary Industries Health & Safety Partnership (PIHSP), almost 50,000 weeks of work in agriculture and fisheries were lost annually between 2008 and 2012 due to injury.

Ashley Bell is the Farm Manager at ‘Raby Stud’, one of Hassad Australia’s 14 aggregations across Australia. Hassad Australia has provided strong leadership to drive a shift in safety culture across all its operations.

“At Raby Stud we have a set of policies to work by, to keep the place safe. In many cases, our changes haven’t been time consuming or costly, and could be implemented in any farming operation.

“It’s not that hard to change the way you think about safety. You’ve just get in a routine of checking everything before you use it, and we make sure that when staff come forward to say something is wrong, we fix it so no one gets hurt, and so the place can keep running,” Mr Bell said.

El Niño Weather Patterns Predicted to Increase

March 5, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
According to a recent study looking at global weather patterns, El Niño happens about every 20 years, causing changes in temperature and air pressure along with extreme weather. But now El Niños are predicted to occur twice as often in the next hundred years.

According to a recent study looking at global weather patterns, El Niño happens about every 20 years, causing changes in temperature and air pressure along with extreme weather.

But now these “extreme” El Niños are predicted to occur twice as often in the next hundred years.

Using data that covers weather activity projections over a 200 year period from 1890 to 2090, researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia predict El Niños will hit the Pacific every decade over the next century.

The latest El Niño related storms in the Pacific ended in 2010.

Wenju Cai, lead author of the study from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia: “The western Pacific becomes dry; Australia has drought, heat waves and bushfires; and Indonesia has bushfires. But in Ecuador and northern Peru, the rainfall increases by 10 times and there are big, big problems.”

Another study of El Niño weather shows that climate change might be contributing to the higher frequency of El Niños over the past fifty years.
