May 17, 2011 – Early this morning, nine members of the Swedish LaRouche movement arrived at the Swedish Royal Science Academy, where a Nobel Laureate Symposium was being held under the chairmanship of Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, with the intent of pushing the Green fascist agenda of killing nuclear energy, fossil fuels, and thus human civilization itself. The officials thought they were meeting out of the public eye, and they couldn’t have been more wrong.

The Swedish LaRouche movement members had one large banner reading “What Schellnhuber Does Not Wish To Know: Human Life Is Sacred” and two pickets “Humans Against Green Global Fascism” and “Lesson No. 1 from Copenhagen: Third World Rejects CO2 Colonialism.” Everyone had to pass these signs.

January 14, 2014 – AUSTRALIA – A heatwave has swept from Western Australia across South Australia, Victoria and parts of western NSW, prompting health warnings for the very young and elderly. Adelaide is set for one of its fiercest bouts of temperatures on record, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting five consecutive days above 40C this week, peaking at 43C on Wednesday. It will be the longest stretch of 40C days in Adelaide since 2009, when the South Australian capital experienced six consecutive days above this mark.

Melbourne is also in the grip of escalating temperatures, with temperatures set to reach 41C on Tuesday, dipping to 39C before ending the week on 40C. Regional areas of South Australia, Victoria and NSW are experiencing even warmer temperatures, with Swan Hill in Victoria set for three consecutive days of 44C this week, while Waikerie in South Australia will reach 45C on Thursday. Broken Hill in NSW will bake in temperatures above 40C all week, according to the bureau. South Australia’s state emergency service has urged the public to drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors, not leave children or pets in cars and prepare for potential power outages due to the scorching temperatures. The SES said people should visit elderly relatives and protect young children from the heat, given the vulnerability to hot weather of very young and older people. Scott Turner, acting deputy chief of the SES, said the heat has a “huge impact” on the body, warning that the mortality rate rises when temperatures rise precipitously. In Melbourne, temperatures are expected to peak at 35C around 6pm on Monday, making for an uncomfortable home commute, although Metro Trains has confirmed there will be no alterations to its timetable. It looks unlikely that Melbourne will beat its record of five consecutive days over 40C, set in 1908.

The heatwave has been caused by a warm front that has spread from Western Australia. The state is currently battling bushfires which have destroyed 44 homes. Alasdair Hainsworth, assistant director for weather services at the Bureau of Meteorology, said the heatwave was picked up by its new pilot heatwave forecast service. “What is unusual about this event, which the pilot heatwave forecast shows, is that when high maximum temperatures and above average minimum temperatures are sustained over a number of days, there is a build-up of ‘excess’ heat,” he said. “Extreme heatwave conditions can be seen in southern NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.” Victoria’s chief health officer Dr Rosemary Lester said: “The body normally sweats to cool down but sometimes sweating isn’t enough and rising body temperature can lead to heat stress. “The effects of heat-related illnesses can range from mild conditions such as a rash or cramps to very serious conditions such as heat stroke, which can be fatal. “Importantly, heat may worsen the condition of someone who already has a medical condition such as heart disease.”

This was the grand pageant at Guernsey’s West Show 2011. Unfortunately the horse drawn wheat harvesting era was missed out as there were no suitable horses or horse equipped trailed implements available.

The West Show is a local countryside show where farm animals and produce are displayed and judged and where local buisnesses show off and sell their products.

Stradbroke Island, also known as Minjerribah, was a large sand island that formed much of the eastern side of Moreton Bay near Brisbane, Queensland until the late 19th century. Today the island is split into two by the Jumpinpin Channel

Archaeological evidence suggests the Quandamooka people lived on the island for at least 21,000 years prior to European settlement. It was also a traditional meeting place between the Quandamooka and the Noonuccal and Gorenpul people. A 1964 survey found 121 pre-European dwelling sites with evidence of substantial wooden huts.

There are persistent stories a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck known locally as the Stradbroke Island Galleon. There exists a body of Aboriginal oral history and several artefacts found in the sand dunes, including a Spanish silver coin from 1597 and the blade of a 17th-century Spanish rapier, but no conclusive evidence.

Captain James Cook made the first documented European sighting of the island in 1770 and named Point Lookout, but did not land. The first historically documented contact between Europeans and the local Aborigines was 1803 when Matthew Flinders landed in search of fresh water. The next documented contact was between shipwreck survivors Thomas Pamphlett, Richard Parsons and John Finnegan landed on Moreton Island in April 1823, before being taken to Stradbroke Island by the natives where they were helped and provided with food, shelter and a canoe by the local Aborigines.

Initial white settlement of Stradbroke Island was at Amity Point where a pilot station was established in 1825. More fertile soil, good sources of fresh water and a better harbour was found at the present location of Dunwich so settlement soon concentrated there. Dunwich became a staging point where larger ships were unloaded of cargo which was placed into smaller vessels to be carried over the sand bars of Brisbane River and up to the penal settlement of Brisbane. The Dunwich settlement was in close proximity to a major Aboriginal camp at Myora Spring. Whites and Europeans generally lived in reasonable harmony though there were moments of conflict as would be expected within the context of two very different cultures meeting for the first time.

Early efforts to establish agriculture on the island, especially plans to grow cotton north of Dunwich, resulted in conflicts with the local Aboriginal tribes. In March 1830, the 57th regiment seeking reprisals for the murder of a guard, attacked a group of Ngugi people near a lagoon on Moreton Island. This was likely the first significant massacre of indigenous people in the region.

A quarantine station was established at the northern end of the island in July 1850. This was due to its proximity to the shipping route, its isolation and to there being a supply of fresh water available.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a pox viral disease of cattle, characterized by fever, multiple firm, circumscribed skin nodules, necrotic plaques in the mucous membranes (chiefly of the upper respiratory tract and oral cavity), mastitis, orchitis and swelling of the peripheral lymph nodes. The disease is caused by a capripox virus of which the prototype strain, “Neethling” was first insolated in South Africa. Clinically the skin lesions of LSD closely resemble those of pseudo-lumpy skin disease caused by the Allerton strain of bovid herpesvirus 2. Lumpy skin disease is categorized as a list A disease by the Office International des Epizooties. Although it does not hava a high mortality rate (usually less than ten per cent), it is of economic importance because of permanent damage to hides, the prolonged debilitating effect it may have on severly affected animals with consequent losses resulting from reduced weight gain, temporary or permanent cessation of milk production as a result of mastitis, temporary or permanent infertility or even sterility in bulls as a consequence of orchitis, and abortion in approximately ten per cent of pregnant cows.
