World War II: Crash Course World History #38

August 16, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! Visit http://store.dftba.com/products/crashcourse-world-history-the-complete-series-dvd-set to buy a set for your home or classroom.

In which John Green teaches you about World War II, aka The Great Patriotic War, aka The Big One. So how did this war happen? And what does it mean? We’ve all learned the facts about World War II many times over, thanks to repeated classroom coverage, the History channel, and your grandfather (or maybe great-grandfather) showing you that Nazi bayonet he used to keep in his sock drawer and telling you a bunch of age-inappropriate stories about his harrowing war experiences. So, why did the Axis powers think forceful expansion was a good idea? (they were hungry). So why did this thing shake out in favor of the Allies? HInt: it has to do with the fact that it was a world war. Germany and Japan made some pretty serious strategic errors, such as invading Russia and attacking the United States, and those errors meant that pretty much the whole world was against them. So, find out how this worldwide alliance came together to stop the Axis expansion. All this, plus Canada finally gets the respectful treatment it deserves. Oh, and a warning: there are a few graphic images in this episode. Sensitive viewers may want to use caution, especially around the 9:15 mark.

V8 Ranch Spring Blooper Reel

If you’ve enjoyed all the videos we have been posting lately, you might get a kick out of some of our “outtakes”. I mean, who doesn’t like a 4-year-old singing “Let It Go” in the middle of filming bulls. Jim freaked when he saw 458 attacking the fence saying “That bull could have broke his leg!” What can we say – the bull is flexible. As we say, life is always fun on V8 Ranch! Enjoy everyone!

V8 Ranch – Brahman and Shorthorn Cattle

Start Date: Founded in 1944

Short Description:

V8 Ranch is a registered Brahman and Shorthorn cattle operation located in Texas. Established in 1944, we strive to meet the demands of all segments of the beef industry by providing elite seedstock backed by outstanding customer service and integrity.

Company Overview: V8 Ranch®

The V8 brand means something to people in our industry.

Because behind those two simple characters – a letter and a number – there is a century-old history of pure bloodlines, skilled expertise, and uncompromising standards. V8 is shorthand for a host of sought-after traits. It is also the symbol of our singular focus on producing one of the world’s most exceptional Brahman herds.

Long Description:

Cattleman worldwide look to V8 Ranch for outstanding Brahman cattle to be used in seedstock and commercial programs. Brahman cattle are ranked #1 for hybrid vigor, efficiency and environmental adaptability. Because of these traits and our high quality cattle, we have sold cattle to every state in the southern U.S. and exported cattle all across North and South America, Central America, Australia, Africa, and Asia. Our cattle are guaranteed and our reputation of business integrity and quality cattle have helped us build our business around repeat customers who come to V8 each year for their Brahman bulls and females.

The Preferred Choice for Commercial Beef Producers, Seedstock Breeders, or Junior Showmen.

We offer high profile genetics, proven cow families, top Brahman sires, documented performance data and carcass ultrasound data on our cattle. We are proud to have one of the most detailed cow production record systems in the Brahman breed, with complete records dating back to 1971. Because of our intense ET program, we are able to offer our top genetics to junior exhibitors as well. In addition to our purebred herd, we currently own and manage a commercial herd of 1,400 females which are part of our three-breed rotational Brahman F-1 program. This experience gives us an advantage since we have been earning a living for more than 50 years in the commercial business. For 40 years, we have worked with thousands of beef producers using Brahman cattle in their F-1 program, using V8 Brahman females bred to Hereford or Angus bulls, or using our low birthweight Brahman bulls on their Angus or Hereford females.

No other ranch in Brahman history has bred more National Grand Champions,or International Grand Champions, or All American Grand Champions than V8 Ranch. We have been a multiple time winner of the HK Trophy for Premier Exhibitor of the International Show, and are home to over 30 ABBA register of renown females. Our Shorthorn cattle have won championships at Denver, Louisville, Junior Nationals, and many more major Shorthorn shows. In 2012, we were honored as Beef Improvement Federation’s Seedstock Producer of the Year.

Since 1944, V8 Ranch has been known for excellence in cattle ranching. For the past 50 years members of the Williams family have worked together with a clear goal of breeding for success through focusing on outstanding cow families. As a hands on, working family ranch, we are very proud of the fact that V8 Ranch has been managed by our immediate family each and every day of the year, currently with three-generations working together on the ranch. An integrated approach in predicting the major crops of Australia

August 15, 2016 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
QAAFI Science Seminar – 7 April 2015

Presented by Dr Andries Potgieter
Research Fellow, QAAFI Centre for Plant Science

ABSTRACT

Since early settlement, the existence of most rural communities in Australia has depended on agriculture. Dry land cropping has been one of the main activities contributing towards the long-term viability and sustainability of these communities. This is still true today. However, the operating environment of producers has become more challenging. Food producers are increasingly exposed to variability and change in world markets, commodity prices and climate, thus increasing their vulnerability and threatening their livelihoods. Advance knowledge of the associated risk in crop production, however, can mitigate some of the impacts of such factors. Hence, easily accessible, near real-time, objective and accurate crop production information is becoming increasingly valuable in decision-making for agricultural industry and government agencies. To date, industry and crop forecasters have had a good idea of the potential crop yield for a specific season, but advance, accurate, timely and objective information on crop area for a shire or region has been mostly unavailable. Here we present a holistic approach to bridging the information gap, which is exacerbated by the lack of accurate and timely information and a projected increase in market and climate volatility within Australia and globally. In addition, the integration of remote sensing technologies in assessing food security is also discussed.

About Dr Andries Potgieter

Dr Potgieter holds a Bachelor of Science, Honours and Master’s degrees in Mathematical Statistics and a PhD specialising in remote sensing. He has more than 24 years of experience in predictive biophysical spatial modelling systems. He is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Queensland, Australia.

His main research interest is in the complex integration of spatial production modelling, climate forecasting and remotely sensed systems at a regional scale. In particular, his interest targets agricultural research that enhances the profitability and sustainability of spatial production systems through a better understanding of the linkages and interactions of such systems across a range of spatial (e.g. field, farm, catchment, national), and temporal (i.e. seasons to decades) scales.
