The REAL GMO Debate – Michael Hansen PhD & Jonathan Latham PhD – GMO WTF!

January 20, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Hear the “other” side of the GMO debate, beyond the industry talking points. This is perhaps my favorite lecture in the series so far!

Michael Hansen PhD is an international expert on agricultural science and policy, and has been working on these issues for over 30 years! He is senior scientist for Consumers Union, and has been instrumental in key aspects of the GMO debate including the Vermont labeling bill, international standards on biotechnology, and genetic contamination issues. He’s an evolutionary biologist by training, and implemented some of the first agroecological techniques of growing food, now widely accepted and mainstream. In short, he’s no amateur 😉

Jonathan Latham PhD is a geneticist and virologist, and the research leading to his PhD thesis involved genetically engineering plants. He is executive director for the Bioscience Resource Project, and editor for Independent Science News, found at independentsciencenews.org

Jonathan is also the author of several scientific reviews on the off-target effects of genetic engineering, with a key focus on the use of viral transgenes in GM crops.

This discussion is part of a student-run, independent 11-part lecture series at Cornell University, in direct response to one student’s experience of pro-GMO propaganda in the classroom.

Robert Schooler is a Cornell student who decided to stand up to Monsanto’s deep ties to his university, by hosting an independent lecture series at Cornell! His project is entitled GMO WTF, and he is currently raising .6 million dollars for various projects at Cornell. Why? Because that’s the exact amount Bill Gates gave Cornell to promote GMO agriculture! Read more here:

Summer cover crops for fall vegetable production

January 19, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Cover crops in general are crops that are not intended for harvest and managed to maintain and enhance the sustainability of a production system by improving soil fertility, water quality, and lead to suppression of weeds, soil erosion, and pests. A summer short season cover crop could be defined as cover crop that is grown or managed for a short period of time, usually 45 to 60 days. Examples include buckwheat, cowpea, oats, oilseed radish, yellow mustard, and sorghum-sudangrass.
This video is a walk-through of various plants that can be used as a summer cover crop and how they can benefit the soil. For more information on sustainable vegetable production visit www.extension.iastate.edu/vegetablelab

CELLS (Animal & Plant cells) GCSE BIOLOGY SCIENCE

January 16, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
http://www.sciencetutorial4u.com This video covers animal and plant cells structures and function for students studying for GCSE additional Science Biology.

Refer to these timings to cover:

1. The structure of the cells 00:28
2. The function of the cells 02:36

Please like, subscribe and share, THANK YOU so much:

Progress Test video on CELLS:

1. THE STRUCTURE OF THE CELLS 00:28

Animal cells have 5 main parts (organelles) which are nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, ribosomes and mitochondria.

Plant cells have extra 3 organelles compared to animal cells. These parts are cell wall, vacuole and chloroplast, which look green in colour.

2. THE FUNCTIONS OF THE ORGANELLES 02:36

NUCLEUS
-Contains genetic materials.
-Controls the activity of the cell.

CYTOPLASM
-It is a jelly like substance.
-It is where chemical reactions takes place.

CELL MEMBRANE
-Controls what goes in and out of the cell
-It is a partially permeable membrane which means it only lets small substance such as water molecules to pass through but not large substances)

RIBOSOMES
-It is involved in protein synthesis.

MITOCHONDRIA
It provides energy by performing the process of respiration. The equation for respiration is glucose (food) and oxygen arrow carbon dioxide, water and energy. if you write this equation in reverse order then you will get the equation of photosynthesis, but the energy has to be written on the top of the arrow as light energy.

CELL WALL
Cell wall is made up of cellulose and its main function is to keep the cell rigid and it is responsible for the shape of the plant cells.

VACUOLE
it contains cell sap which stores sugar and salt.

CHLOROPLAST
Chloroplast contains a green pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophylls trap sunlight to make glucose (food) by a process know as photosynthesis.

Ancient Alien Genetic Engineering – An Explanation for Evolution ? (DOCUMENTARY)

January 15, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Ancient Alien Genetic Engineering – An Explanation for Evolution ? (DOCUMENTARY) This documentary looks at the history of civilization on this planet, how and when agriculture and precision-engineered architecture were developed and by whom. Is Ancient Alien Genetic Engineering – An Explanation for Evolution ? Dr. Rita Louise delves into the topic of ancient agriculture and the domestication of wheat and corn and uncovers a number of odd twists of fate, could ancient aliens GMO engineering be responsible for massive leaps in evolution.

Humans were hunter-gathers who subsisted on leafy greens and lean muscle meats. How come they suddenly figured out how to domesticate and turn into major food sources circa 5,000 BC? This documentary asks major questions on the influence of ancient aliens on genetically engineered crops from ancient times.

From seed to loaf (part 1 of 2) allotment scale production of bread making wheat

January 12, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
This video is about small-scale wheat production using modified garden machinery and a home-built threshing machine. I grow my own wheat and make bread not because its 10% cheaper but because I think its 100% better – and it gives me great satisfaction. Growing wheat this way is an indulgence as it requires a certain amount of land, if space is tight growing vegetables and salad crops makes more sense. If you want to try yourself, please check first to see if wheat will grow in your area. Enjoy whatever you grow and remember -look after the land and the land will look after you.

Jan Sansad – GM Crops: Advantages and apprehensions

January 6, 2017 By Editor

Description given on Youtube:
Adoption of Genetically Modified (GM) crops in the mainstream farming is a highly debated topic. On one hand it promises food security in the times of food shortage and climate change but on the flip side it is said that it is a brazen attempt to monopolise the food chain and would create havoc by replacing the natural order with an unnatural, human engineered variety.

Being a major agrarian country, GM crops have found their way to the doorstep of India where a similar debate is being held on its adoption, right from the farmers in the sowing fields to the Parliament.

In this edition of Jan Sansad, we travel to Nagpur in Maharashtra and try to understand the concept of GM crops and get views from various perspectives considering the India context.
