Kenneth J. Bindas examines the lives of rural Georgians and others in his new collection of more than 600 oral histories, Remembering the Great Depression in the Rural South. Bindas provides a detailed, personal chronicle of the 1930’s from a rural Southern perspective and captures an important historical era and its impact. These reminiscences were collected over a four-year period in the late 1980’s as people looked back over their lives and those of their families.

Bushcraft Camping Part 3, Gold in the Creeek Bed
Description given on Youtube:
Camped in one of Victoria’s gold hotspots. A bush campsite next to a creek that has alluvial gold in it; but also some copper pyrite LOL (fools gold). Are there some chunky gold nuggets resting on the creek’s bedrock? Is there a huge deposit of gold further upstream that every prospector dreams of? One can only speculate because this is a National Park so gold panning or mining is not allowed.
In many ways, the state of Victoria in Australia was founded by gold prospectors. More than 80 million ounces (2267 metric tons) of gold has been discovered since foreign colonization in the 1800s. But note that indigenous people lived here for thousands of years before that; sadly much of their culture is being lost. Amazingly this quantity of gold represents only a portion of what is still here to be found!
The main purpose of this bush camping video was to share some of the features of this ultra light tarp setup that we were using.
The 2 photos you see at the end are 1. replica of the Welcome Stranger (worlds largest nugget) and 2. photo of the miners who found it with their wives 🙂 Both photos thanks to the State Library of Victoria.
